No matter how long you have been wearing SureSmile aligners, you may begin to wonder why your trays are not fitting as comfortably as they should. Although your teeth are constantly moving throughout treatment, it’s important that your aligners fit snugly once you swap to a new set. So, what if they aren’t? Is there anything you can do? Learn why this problem is occurring and what you and your dentist can do to address it.

What Causes SureSmile Aligners Not to Fit?

Knowing the reason why your aligners are not fitting correctly is important, especially if you want to identify an appropriate solution to fix it. It might be that:

  • Your teeth are not moving as quickly as anticipated
  • You are not wearing your aligners 20-22 hours a day
  • Your aligners have become warped or damaged
  • You just switched to a new set of aligners

Are There Ways to Fix the Problem & Keep Treatment on Track?

Yes, but before meeting with your dentist, consider whether any of the above-mentioned reasons might be the cause of your ill-fitting aligners.

For example, if you’re not wearing your trays as long as you should, use an app to help you remember to reinsert your aligners after eating and/or cleaning. This will help you meet the 22-hour goal each day.

Another example might be to switch your aligners (when it’s time) at bedtime so that you avoid the initial discomfort that can arise, and prevent the possibility of taking them out because of soreness.

Otherwise, if your aligners are warped or damaged because you’ve used hot water, stepped on them, etc., you’ll need to talk to your dentist about getting replacements. In the meantime, they may tell you to wear the previous set.

If your dentist discovers that your teeth are not moving like they originally anticipated, a treatment revision may be required. You may need to wear a set of aligners for longer (or shorter), based on your smile’s needs.

SureSmile is fully customizable, which means that adjustments can be made if necessary. It’s important, though, to identify the reason your Invisalign is not fitting properly so that you can quickly make changes and keep your smile goals on track.
