Summer is officially here! Whether you are planning an adventurous trip to a different country or a relaxing staycation nearby, it is important to keep your oral health in mind amid your fun in the sun. After all, the last thing you want is to end the season with a mouthful of cavities. To protect your smile, make sure to exercise caution with the below popular summertime activities.

#1. Indulging in Sugary Treats

Fizzy soda at the movies and ice-cold popsicles by the pool are hard to pass up. However, sugary treats like these turn into enamel-eroding acid when they interact with the bacteria in your mouth, significantly increasing your chances of tooth decay. Therefore, it’s a good idea to reserve these foods and beverages for special occasions. When you do indulge, make sure to drink plenty of water and use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth that evening.

#2. Not Wearing a Mouthguard During Sports

Flag football, ultimate frisbee, and skateboarding are a few ways you can enjoy some fun in the sun with your loved ones. To protect your smile from a rogue ball or accidental elbow to your face, you should always wear a mouthguard. Neglecting to do so can prevent your otherwise pleasant afternoon from turning into a stressful trip to your dentist’s office.

#3. Swimming

You already know that taking a dip in the pool is a great way to cool off and get some exercise. What you may not know, however, is that chlorine can damage the enamel on your teeth. Before getting in, check the pH balance, which should be between 7.2 and 7.8. If you don’t have test strips on hand, take note of water that burns your nose or eyes (this is typically a sign that the pH is too low). Make sure to keep your mouth closed underwater and wear a mouthguard if needed.

#4. Neglecting Your Six-Month Dental Checkup

Although it may be hard to believe, 2021 is already halfway through! If you have yet to schedule your first checkup and cleaning of the year, now is the time to do so. Pushing it off until the fall or winter can allow plaque to turn into tartar and once-small dental problems to develop into something more severe. Fortunately, you can prevent that from happening by scheduling your six-month visit to your dentist sooner rather than later.

Your summer plans should include enjoying the warmer weather and longer days, not worrying about your teeth. So, make sure to avoid the above harmful summertime activities!
