If you’ve stepped up your oral hygiene game this past year because of COVID-19, good for you! Maintaining healthy teeth and gums will not only help to lower your risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath, but it will also increase your confidence and enhance your appearance. If you are preparing for a week-long getaway with your family or friends, don’t let the excitement of vacation keep you from taking care of your smile. Here are 4 summer oral health tips you can use to ensure your pearly whites look and feel their best.

Drink Plenty of Water

While enjoying the summer sun, you’ll need to stay hydrated. While an alcoholic beverage or soda might sound enticing, it’s best to choose water while soaking up the rays. Not only will this benefit your body, but you’ll also keep your salivary glands working to flush out any food or bacteria that might try to adhere to the surfaces of your teeth and cause decay or stains.

Strengthen Your Teeth with Fluoride

Apart from brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, it’s also recommended that you drink from the tap. While this isn’t always possible, especially in places where the drinking water isn’t safe for travelers, it is best to consume fluoridated water, as it will help to strengthen your tooth enamel and better protect it from potential tooth decay.

Bring a Reusable Straw

This may sound odd, but if you simply cannot keep from consuming your favorite soda or poolside daiquiri, make sure you are using a straw. A reusable one is great for the environment, but any type of straw will help to minimize the exposure between the liquid and your teeth. Because these drinks are often highly acidic, carbonated, or full of sugar, using a straw can help deter some of the contents that can wreak havoc on your tooth enamel.

Enjoy a Nice Cup of Tea

When not filled with sugar, tea is a great beverage option! Want to get rid of the bacteria in your mouth while lower your risk for common dental problems like decay and disease? Try swapping out your morning cup of coffee for tea. Sipping it by the pool or on the back porch may help you to feel more relaxed as your body and smile reap the benefits.

Enjoy the sun and the sand while away on vacation, but don’t forget to make good choices when it comes to taking care of your smile this summer!
